Christmas in April began in Midland, Texas in 1973. A community group of volunteers chose to combine their efforts and repair the dilapidated homes of low-income, disabled seniors. An elderly woman whose home was repaired exclaimed “This is just like Christmas – in April” – a name which was adopted by the young volunteer organization. The idea was quickly followed in other cities throughout the United States. In 2001 Christmas in April, Albany-Berkeley-Emeryville, as well as many other chapters throughout the nation embraced a new name – Rebuilding Together – that reflects our work and the partnership approach used by our organization. Some chapters elected to maintain the original name and are now known as Christmas in April, an affiliate of Rebuilding Together. Rebuilding Together has chapters in 50 states and 1.8 million volunteers have participated to date.
